So, it looks like you are planning a trip to Lithuania and searching for accommodation in Vilnius, right? That’s great!
I enjoy planning the trip and traveling, however, sometimes it can be really overwhelming. In the beginning, searching for cheap flights, perfect lodging and places to visit is fun, but since I get too much information my brain says ” I’m out of this madness”.
Today I will tell you several of my secrets which helps me to find the best accommodation for holidays and to keep the brain in the place, by the way. As a mommy, during family vacations, I just want to relax. I don’t want to bother myself (or my husband) with washing dishes, preparing food, cleaning. JUST PURE RELAX!
HOTEL OR VACATION RENTAL?
This is the first important decision you need to make. I am always comparing the price of hotels on Booking.com and holiday rentals on Airbnb.com (by the way, you can get a 25€ discount here towards your first trip) and checking which offers fit better into our budget.
For the weekend getaways, we are choosing hotels because in the most cases the breakfast is included in the price and majority of the time we want to spend on sightseeing, not in the hotel room.
On the other hand, if you want to feel like a local, the best would be to live like a local. The perfect place to find a great accommodation in Vilnius is Airbnb.com. Before making the decision between a hotel and vacation rental you should ask yourself ONE important question:
WHAT AMENITIES ARE A MUST-HAVE?
Since you probably want to get the best value for money it is wise to ask yourself this simple question. As long as you not going to delay the decision about booking a vacation rental or hotel to the last day, you’re guaranteed to find the perfect one for your stay at a fair price.
So what would you need during your holidays in Lithuania? We have a list of amenities which are vital while planning the family holiday.
During vacation, I like to minimize possibilities of stressful situations and that’s why a 24-hour check-in is an important thing for us. You never know will your flight be delayed or you will be lost a bit on the way – the key will be waiting for you anytime you arrive for example in a lockbox.
I can bet it would be really hard for you to live without internet for even couple of days, at least it would be a big deal for me. That’s why always when choosing a hotel or vacation rental I add a tick next to wireless internet before performing a search. Only once I made a mistake and booked a lodge without free WiFi – it cost us a fortune to stay connected during our stay.
As long as you’re planning to stay for longer than a couple of days in one place, having a well-equipped kitchen would be a useful thing. Since almost a half of last year, we spent on traveling (5 months in vacation rentals, and a month in a hotel ) I know now that I couldn’t imagine life without a kettle, dishwasher, and oven for longer than a weekend.
I am sure that you like to look fresh anytime of the day as much as I do. In most of the hotels, free toiletries, hairdryer, and towels are a standard, but in vacation rentals not often. I like to have all these things available and not to worry how to fit them to my hand luggage.
Before booking an accommodation in Vilnius (or anywhere else) make sure that the beddings are included in the price. It would be terribly inconvenient to bring your own beddings or to pay for it additionally.
Since you plan to spend in Vilnius more than a weekend make sure you will take enough clothes or rent an accommodation which has a laundry machine. Don’t count on tumble dryer as they are not popular neither in Lithuania nor in Eastern Europe.
HOW MUCH DOES ACCOMMODATION IN VILNIUS COST?
The price range of accommodation in Vilnius is really wide. If you are a budget traveler you can find a hostel in Vilnius for as little as 10€ per night. Hotels are more expensive but guarantee you way more privacy than a shared hostel room. Prices start at 40€ for a double room with breakfast included in a room rate ( check out Ecotel Vilnius Hotel for great offers and discounts ).
In case you are planning to go on a longer trip to Lithuania, the best choice would be a vacation rental. You can (rarely, but you can) find an apartment for as little as 18€ in the heart of Vilnius Old Town (usually the price starts at 25€ on weekdays and 40-50€ on weekend). Before you book it, check what is included in the price. Remember that Airbnb service fee, as well as cleaning fee, is not included in the price and you will need to pay it separately on the check-out.
HOW TO PAY LESS FOR ACCOMMODATION IN VILNIUS?
First of all, you need to know that price for accommodation in Vilnius fluctuates depending on a date and day of the week. Touristic season (high-price season) in Lithuania starts in the late May and ends in mid-October.
It gets really expensive during Christmas time (24th – 26th of December) and New Year’s Eve (31st of December). January and February are one of the cheapest months for visiting Lithuania as the temperature can drop even down to -35°C.
In the beginning of March the prices of accommodation in Vilnius, go up since thousands of tourist arriving to take part in the oldest folk arts and crafts fair in Lithuania – Saint Casimir’s Fair. Other times of the year when prices go really high are:
- Easter in March or April
- Saint John’s Festival in June
- Days of Vilnius in September
On these dates, you can expect prices even 50% higher than out of the season. Unless you want to save a bit of money I would advise you to travel mostly during weekdays. The lowest prices start on Sunday evenings and end on Thursdays.
HOW TO GET A DISCOUNT FOR ACCOMMODATION IN VILNIUS?
If you think it’s not easy to get a discount for accommodation you are wrong. Here you can find discounts on Airbnb and Booking.com as they are my favourite sites for searching a hotel or vacation rental.
Just grab it and book your first trip to Lithuania cheaper.
